India is a country that has an incredible diversity of landscapes, cultures, and people. It can be difficult to get the most out of your visit there if you are not aware of their customs or have never traveled before. That’s why I’ve compiled some tips for traveling in India that will help make the experience more delightful!
Tip 1: Don’t Expect Everything to Go According to Plan
This is the most important tip that I have for you on traveling in India. The country’s infrastructure was not built by Western or Eastern engineers, so it can be difficult to predict what will happen on your trip. Keep calm and don’t get angry when there are TSA-style security checks at local businesses, when trains are delayed, or anything else. Things happen in India! It’s part of being there! Just relax and see where the day takes you. You never know who you’ll meet along the way. Maybe you’ll even make a new friend!

Tip 2: Get Used to Being Nudged in Crowded Spaces More Than Once…If Not More
The second trip to India tip is when you first arrive in India, the constant nudging and pushing that you’ll encounter from others may be a bit jarring. However, it’s just another one of those things that you’ll get used to as time goes on! Don’t let it bother you too much. Everyone else is just trying to move around as well as possible in such crowded spaces. Try to relax and enjoy the energy of all the people moving together!
Tip 3: Be Aware of How Much You’re Spending at All Times
India doesn’t run like other countries do when it comes to money (their currency is called rupees)! The government has mandated restrictions on withdrawals and ATM limits for foreign tourists who don’t have an Indian bank account or credit/debit card. There’s also a space on the ATM machine where you can add your thumbprint to allow for withdrawals over the limit. However, some banks will not let you do it…or they’ll charge you extra fees! Just be aware of how much money you have and don’t spend more than what you’re comfortable with. I would suggest carrying small notes (100s and 50s) and big bills (1000s and 5000s). Then if an ATM won’t allow your withdrawal, at least you can pay for something nearby using smaller bills until bigger bills become available again.
Tip 4: Use Cautious Pronunciation When You Speak English
India is filled with people who are fluent in English, but many are still learning. You don’t want to make other English speakers look bad! So, when you’re in crowded spaces or around an Indian who has trouble speaking English, be cautious about how loud you are and what words you use. If there’s background noise, speak slowly and say each word with care. Also, if an Indian doesn’t understand something that you’ve said, just politely repeat the same thing again instead of getting upset or irritated with them!
Tip 5: Bring Medications for Everything
Another trip to India tip is that it is advisable to pack all the medications that you think might come in handy along your trip to India (for example, anti-diarrheal tablets). When I went on my honeymoon there, I got really sick from eating street food outside our hotel one night. My husband had to run out and buy some medication for me because I was so incapacitated! I didn’t have any stomach issues after that, but you never know when something like this will come up.

Tip 6: Check Where You Should Sit on Buses/Trains Before Getting On
India has a very interesting system for seating in most modes of public transportation (including the ones I mentioned above). There are two types of seats: women’s seats and men’s seats. If there is no indicator on the seat itself, just sit down anywhere you please. However, if it says “general” or has another sign on it, then do not sit there! It’s reserved for people who want to keep the family seating area intact.
Tip 7: Only Ride Trusted Taxi Service
If you are traveling near places like Mumbai to Delhi, it’s best to only take trusted ones if you have no other choice. Drop Taxi is the best example of one that I would trust. They have great service and rates, and the drivers are always polite.
Tip 8: Get a Local SIM Card for Your Phone to Use While You’re There!
If you have an unlocked phone, it’s easy to buy a local SIM card from any mobile company shop. That way, you can use your phone as normal and stay in touch with friends/family. If not, don’t worry about getting one because there are plenty of places that will let tourists borrow their WIFI! Just make sure to always ask someone before using their WIFI connection (just like anywhere else). Also, check out this article I wrote on the best apps for India travel!
Tip 9: Go with the flow
Try not to be too stressed out. India is a wonderful country that you’ll enjoy if you relax and go with the flow (because things rarely ever happen on time)! Don’t fret about small mishaps here and there because they’re just part of the experience! Also, make sure to take care of yourself – eat well, sleep as much as possible, wear sunscreen/hat/sunscreen for your skin type, etc. All these tips will help you stay happy and healthy while in India and avoid any unnecessary stress or anxiety. I hope this article was helpful! If it was, please share it 🙂 Thanks so much again for reading!
Tip 10: Get your E-Visa
The last trip to India tip is to get your E-Visa. India has a strict policy where they do not allow tourists to enter the country unless their passport is at least six months old. It’s best if you get this visa e-visa online before arriving in India, so that way there are no problems when it comes time for your paperwork/biometrics! You should be able to find out how through Google or check with your local embassy. The Indian government also requires all visitors have an international credit card on hand just in case!
